The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper Part 18

The “fruit of the vine” is actually a new phrase coined by our Lord. This tells us what kind of oinois is to make up the contents. The word for blood is “dam.” The juice of the grape shows the picture intended as the blood inside the body that only God could provide. It HAD to be rendered, expunged, poured out. There was never a time in the plan of the Almighty when the blood of Christ was not to be shed, and that purposely. This picture began with the Patriarchal covenant and followed suit throughout the Mosaical Covenant. The purpose of Christ coming in His body prepared Him by the Ancient of Days, before the beginning, was to “shed,” sacrifice, offer the blood within for the sins of mankind—even before man sinned.
Blood contains the essence of animal and human life. Because of the sacredness of life, that energy which only God can give, the Israelites were not allowed to eat-not even eat the flesh from which the blood had not carefully been removed. This prohibition is the essence of the Jewish word “kosher,” which prevents the orthodox Jews, even today, from buying or eating meat which has not been slaughtered and drained under the supervision of a rabbi. In Leviticus 17:10-14, the penalty for the breaking of this law was that the sinner should be “cut off from among his people.” Noah demanded this even in his day. Genesis 9:4 The reason is given for this in verse 11 of Leviticus 17—“I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul.” It was life for life—the only means God allowed for the tolerance of sin—the sinner deserved to die; therefore the sacrifice must die. Never was the blood of an innocent animal equal to the blood offered by the sinless Son of God. Because of the sacredness of God’s law and the demand of holiness in His creature, man, this principle, so blatantly ignored, is in defiance of God’s law when the Roman Catholic Church teaches the doctrine of trans-substantiation—the changing of the substance from the alcoholic liquor they use to the literal blood of Christ when the priest blesses it. They literally teach the eating of blood!!
God showed the sprinkling or pouring out of the blood of the sacrifice of the innocent animal upon the altar so the sinner could see that something had to die to stop the vengeance of God for breaking His law!! Cain would not be allowed, his offering would not be accepted. God intended to have this shown. Hence, the statement in Hebrews; “without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin” Hebrews 9:22 Again, it is unquestionable that some could assume Christ would come to this earth and not intend to die!! The blood of the animal, although an imperfect type, still showed God’s plan!! The glorious difference between the blood of Christ and that of an animal is that Christ blood caused God to have no remembrance of the sin. Hebrews 8:12.
When we “drink of the contents of the cup, the fruit of the vine,” we are not eating or drinking blood. We are seeing the picture God intends us to see. His Son, sinless and perfect, had to DIE so the vengeance of God would not rest on our heads!! It is that which the kindness of God provided so we could be in fellowship with Him. We, who partake of this cup’s contents without consideration or understanding are mocking the plan of God and the blood of His Son—“eating and drinking damnation” for we have not only showed lack of appreciation and understanding for what God had planned and the blood prepared which His Son shed, we also have shown disdain for THE great sacrifice!! Watch carefully, my brother, how you partake and who you offend!! Serious consideration of this act of worship is advised!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 17

Not often mentioned but very important in the understanding of the Supper is that Jesus taught the Lord’s Supper a ratification- proof of the NEW CONVENANT. NO covenant could be ratified-established-bound-brought-proved to be in existence without “the shedding of blood”!! Something innocent had to die!! The sacrifice that brought this Supper into existence, made from the foundations of the world, was not an animal, not just a human, not an spirit-only-angel—it was one who possessed the nature called God. The message of Jesus was “I have to die” or the Old Testament Covenant will not be annulled. Romans 7:4 says; “We have become dead to the Law by the body of Christ that we should be married to another, even to Him whom God raised from the dead.” Christ was shown in pattern/type in the marriages of Jacob. Having two wives, Jacob only loved Rachel for whom he worked twice the length of time to have as his own. The marriages to Leah and Rachel pre-pictured the marriages of the Christ. The woman less-loved had all the children, again picturing that all was pre-determined. A new picture was introduced, Christ would not have TWO wives! It was prophetically shown that no one could stay in the first marriage, There would be no two wives, two marriages, two families—one of these had to be “taken out of the way.” That the Church of Christ was considered double perfection by God, Jacob worked a second 7 years for her hand. (One thing is interesting, a little inside information, Leah knew she was not the “loved”!!)
For a covenant to be perfected, something had to die!! The message of Jesus all the time He was here in His earthly ministry, was exactly that—“I will die”. “Jesus said unto them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” John 2:19; 3:14. A covenant is of force AFTER the man who made it is dead!! The BLOOD is not the covenant, the covenant is NOT the blood. Moses sprinkled blood ON the COVENANT AND MADE THE COVENANT BINDING. Christ had to present the BLOOD to God the Father and He chose a “cup, container, body” to be that container. If the blood was the covenant, could Moses sprinkle the covenant on the covenant?? God demanded BLOOD to make a covenant binding. Like the covenant written on stone, the NEW Covenant would not be binding UNTIL the blood was offered. The BLOOD OFFERED AND ACCEPTED made the covenant binding!! The blood was offered 53 days AFTER it was shed!! It was on the day of Pentecost, 53 days after Christ had been crucified that the new covenant came down from God out of Heaven that the apostles declared!! Christ dying blood (not His body) served to establish a new religious institution. We declare-teach-proclaim the establishment of the New Covenant EVERYTIME (in a cup) we partake of the Lord’s Supper. The New Covenant being established by His blood, how can some say He is not King of the Kingdom and partake of these emblems??
The expression “this is” refers to the drink element contained IN the cup, not the cup itself. The cup was the manner of means, the way God had determined to present His blood. For your consideration, I tell you His body was His cup presented first on earth and then before all who were present in Heaven. If the “cup” is the manner of means and all things that hold the blood of the everlasting covenant is described as a “cup,” this changes the perspective that a lot of people have about Christ prayer in Gethsemanae!! “Let this ‘cup,’ pass from Me” could be explained as “let Me shed this body”!! This fits everything Jesus had said about His dying. His task would be complete then, and He could then GO HOME, and “set down to reign”!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 16

God always does things by intent. The elements of the Lord’s Supper are actually three in number. We will miss a valuable truth if we fail to realize what they are. As there were three dispensations; three members of the nature called God; three parts of man; there are three elements in the Supper.
“Our Lord took the bread.” This was unleavened, there was nothing mixed, carried across, contaminating, or altering its basic oneness. He interpreted the bread to be “His body” which HAD to be given. Unlike the sacrifices of the other covenants, the physical part of the sacrifice of the New Testament Covenant is ONE!! “He took the cup.” There were TWO parts to the cup, the utensil itself and the element within the utensil. Christ interpreted the contents of the cup as “My blood,” yet there was a cup which we understand to be the avenue of means by which the offering would be made. He described the cup as the container in Luke and 1 Corinthians 11. IN these two passages the container is the representative of the means or way that He would die for the Church. As often as we partake we are teaching, proclaiming, declaring, and verifying to the recipient and the audience of the recipient our faith in cup and its element. Jesus declared He would not eat or drink again of these elements again in this life-Matthew 26:29; Mark 14:25; and Luke 22:18. There was a reason for this declaration! By handling two implements He handled three things that were necessary to satisfy His Father.
The elements partaken were “to proclaim.” The Greek word is katagello which means to proclaim or teach. We are not only remembering—we are teaching others what occurred in the death of our Lord as we participate in this memorial. The elements are “teaching” symbols. To the child or the unlearned, they teach-nothing!!
Before a covenant can be established there has to be a sacrifice that involves blood. This offering must be someone or something that was totally innocent. Hebrews 10:4-5 states “For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should (not could, God never intended them to be acceptable) should take away sins. Wherefore, when He came into the world, He said, ‘Sacrifice and offering thou would not allow (accept), but a body thou hast prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou hast had no pleasure (appeasement). So, said I, Lo, I come (in the volume (from the very beginning) of the book it is written of Me) to do Thy will, O God. (By this sacrifice of My body) He took away the first (covenant) and established the second (covenant). And by the second covenant we, the Church of Christ are sanctified through the offering of the body (the means) of Jesus Christ once and for all.” Hebrews 10:4-10
Christ could not die as God so God gave Him a body to inhabit. Every time we partake we are teaching, showing, and affirming our confidence in the results of His sacrifice!! We know it has taken our sins away!! When Moses gave the covenant of the Old Testament, it could not and was not ratified (declared legal and binding) until it was “sprinkled with blood.” A greater sacrifice was demanded by the Father to appease His spirit because man had so callously sinned against Him. Like the writing of the commandments on stone, blood sprinkled on the covenant gave the offering value and made it binding!! The blood is not the covenant and the covenant is not the blood but one is of not value without the other. The words of Moses were of no value unless they were written and engraved on stone—something that could not be destroyed. Christ died so His blood could establish a NEW covenant, which in turn made the new covenant as binding as though it was written on stone that can NOT be altered!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 15

The Jews were cut off because of unbelief, Romans 11:20, when their law of ordinances was removed and nailed to the cross, Colossians 2:14. David said, “According as it is written, God has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear. Unto this day, “Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them: Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their backs always, I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come to the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.” Romans 11:8-11
The “spiritual death” came to old Israel at the cross. This was followed by the pouring out of the Holy Spirit which brought the everlasting gospel. Her house was forsaken by the Son of God to whom she was married and now divorced. She had no writing of divorcement and could never again be the wife of the Savior. Desolate, she ran to the open arms of comrades she had long been courting, waiting for the time when she could stop the rouse and live with them satisfying the appetites of debauchery and licentiousness she had come to prefer to her Lord. Then in A.D. 70 her physical death came. She died two separate deaths, spiritual and physical. She suffered two plaugings. Once when her law of ordinance was nailed to the cross and she was cut off from God and the other when the Spirit of God rent the veil in the Temple from top to bottom. Her nation was destroyed by Him they had rejected: “Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; that made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of His prisoners?” Isaiah 14:16-17 When He ‘opened not the house of His prisoners’ He had prepared her no way to ever, again be rejoined to the fellowship she had for ‘lintel soup’ rejected. “For Agar is mount Sinai, in Arabia, and answers to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children…nevertheless, what says the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” Galatians 4:21-33 The casting out the children of the kingdom of Israel and the receiving of the children of God in Christ is the whole theme of Christ’s message. Matthew 21:33-44 For one there would be rejoicing and a new life. For the other, there is lamentation and death. When the divorce papers were served on Israel in Jerusalem AD 33 at the first offering, fellowship with those of the nature called God was forever shattered and could never be restored. Israel, as a physical nation, was NOT invited to the table of the Lord!!
Eating of the bread and drinking of the cup is the fellowship reserved only for the Lamb’s bride and began to be observed when “all things could be made ‘new.” When, on the first day of the week, we remember the Lord, we declare the “dispensation of the fullness of times” has come. We declare the invitation which was given to the wedding guests when the marriage supper of the Lamb was made ready has come. We declare, as Christ had appointed a table for His disciples at which to eat and drink, Luke 22:24-30, this has come. And we assert the blessing reserved for the members of the Church of Christ (to eat and drink at the table of the New Covenant) has come and this blessing is the fellowship we have with the nature called God!!
The Church of Christ speaks but one language that is universal to every land. We may preach, pray, sing in a native tongue; but we partake in one language, that being the Lord’s Supper. In this language, we fellowship they who are beyond our nature, and we do this every first day of the week!! Shall we partake??

The Lord’s Supper Part 14

The King of Kings, who is the Word of God, makes war with the sword which proceeds out of His mouth. He smites the nations and rules them with a rod of iron. How does He smite the nations? He beheads them, He kills a third part of man, the spiritual part, His field of operation is the spiritual heart of man. He crucifies the “old man,” Romans 6:6. He puts it to death to be resurrected with Him, Colossians 3:1-5, to walk in newness of life, Romans 6:3-4. He destroys the body of sin that we may present our members holy and undefiled unto God as true servants, pure and white. They, who are the “dead in the Lord,” Revelations 14:13, are made members of the family f God being “added” to the Church of Christ when we were baptized into Christ for the remission of sin, Acts 2:38. Christ never makes war against flesh and blood, Ephesians 6:12, He leads His army in a fight for something of far greater worth—the eternal part!! What is true of they who have become servants of this great King is that they are subjects of a spiritual kingdom, not a physical; therefore, they eat and drink spiritual food prepared for spiritual beings, the Lord’s Supper. God has provided!! He knows how to give us sustenance. This “supper” is the first taste of an eternal existence!!
In chapter 19 of Revelation, the riding of horses is only a symbol, the sword proceeding out of His mouth is also a symbol; it signifies the word of God spoken and written by inspiration of God. The vesture dipped in blood signifies the sacrifice made for the redemption of the Church from sin. The soldiers following Christ on white horses are not literal soldiers but gospel preachers and teachers of the Word of God. They go forth not in heaven but in the kingdom of heaven under the bloodstained banner of Prince Immanuel!! They go forth conquering and to conquer. There is nothing and no one who can defeat them in their stated cause!! Remember: this is the dispensation called “the fullness of times” when He could “gather together in One, all things (nations, men) in Christ, both in heaven and on earth (the sinless joined to those who, by His blood, have become sinless); even “in Him.” Ephesians 1:10. “There is therefore no condemnation to them which are “in Christ Jesus,” who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made us free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in the flesh, God sent His own Son in that same flesh to destroy him who had control of all those who had died to the fellowship of Deity; condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in the Church of Christ/us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1-4
When we come to the “table of the Lord” we come to share, fellowship, participate with ALL the family, ALL of the “it.” Backgrounds melt into nothingness, color of skin-the same and the wondrous thing is, so do natures!! For the first time, man could fellowship with another nature, the nature call God. Man and God could again be ONE. What a step UP. Never in the annals of time had man the invitation nor the opportunity to share a meal with they of another nature. Never would God have stooped down to man because of sin. Rotten, moldy, smelly sin is not something we would allow at our table, how could one expect that from God? Also, our nature was in duality-we were both physical and spiritual. God is a spirit. The pre-millennial liars, who teach Christ is coming back to “set-up” His throne, miss the purpose of Christ return. They make all things physical. This is opposite to the truth taught in the Scriptures!! He is coming to make us totally spiritual as They are totally spiritual!! This takes place only “in Christ”!! Would you like to find out how to get “into Christ”?

The Lord’s Supper Part 13

There was an invitation given by the Bridegroom when the marriage supper of the Lamb was made ready. Matthew 22:1-9 tells us of the guests. In Revelation 19:17-21 the guests were called fowls: “Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That you may eat of the flesh of kings, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped is image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant was slain with the sword of Him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of His mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”
The invitation was for guests which in Revelation were called fowls. It was the marriage of the King’s Son. Every Bible student knows that the supper of the Lord is eaten at the table of the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:16-21). He knows that Christ appointed unto His disciples a table at which to eat and drink in His kingdom (Luke 22:24-30). He also knows that the eating and drinking began on the day of Pentecost, after the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:42). The “angel standing in the sun” in Revelation 19: 17, was Christ. This angel is announcing the gathering of all nations to eat the marriage supper of the Lamb. Those who are invited ate only flesh, unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine are not mentioned. Why is flesh the only item on the table? We have these symbols that must be solved before this passage makes sense! First, the word “eat” signifies “fellowship”. Jesus said, “I have meat to eat that you know not of” John 4:32. The disciples could not understand His language, therefore, they said, “Has any man brought Him ought to eat?” That of which our Lord spake was fellowship or communion with the Father. Jesus uses it again in Chapter 6. “This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I AM the bread of life which came down from heaven: if any man eats of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world… I say unto you, except you eat of the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood; you have no life in you.” John 6:50-53 “The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” If one tried to analyze this, as many do the eating of Revelation 18 and 19, they would be just as confused as the Jews. Jesus used the term “eat” as fellowship with Him through faith. This cannot be denied. In verse 47, He said that man who believed on Him would have everlasting life. In verse 53, He said, “Except you eat of My flesh and drink of My blood you have no life in you.” Therefore, eating and drinking is not eating and drinking but fellowship in obedience to His commandments!! Jesus was not speaking of cannibalism, He was speaking of a time when man’s sins would be forgiven—this being reached because of the preaching of the gospel and obedience to it, THEN one would be invited to eat (fellowship) with Deity!!
For those who do not believe this, let them explain the four cornered sheet let down out of heaven for Peter in Acts 10. “Arise, Peter, kill and eat,” was not Christ trying to make Peter a hunter!! He was telling Peter it was time for the Gentile to come into the family of God. The flesh of fowls in Acts 10 represents the same thing as Revelation 18. The Jew and Gentile would eat at the same table!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 12

All civilized nations and kingdoms have constitutions; and in their constitutions they have declared who are members of the social compact. Besides those who constitute the community at the time a constitution is adopted, they say who shall compose the community in al time coming; that is, who shall be admitted into it, and by what means they shall become members of it. They have always decreed that their own posterity shall inherit their political rights and immunities. But they have, also, ordained that foreigners; that is, members of other communities, may become, by adoption, or naturalization, citizens, or fellow members, of the same community. They have, in their wisdom and benevolence, instituted a rite or form of adoption, or naturalization, which form has much meaning; and which, when submitted to, changes the state of the subject from stranger to fellow-citizen. This rite or form adoption in Christianity is called baptism, and all who expect to become members of the divine institution called the Church of Christ have to be baptized BEFORE they can expect to be allowed the rights and privileges afforded members. When, in this new kingdom, the rules and rites of that said kingdom become sacred and holy to the new entrant as it has been to all who ever wore the name of the King to which they show allegiance. No one will or could affront or confront the King by denying Him His due in these rites; especially if He has posted information about these wishes abroad concerning their observance. In the kingdom of Christ there is such a rite and all who are baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of sin are honor bound to assemble together every Sunday, until Christ returns, to remember His death, burial, and resurrection as He has requested!! This rite, invitation, request of the King is called the Lord’s Supper.
On the Lord’s table, there is of necessity but ONE loaf of unleavened bread unlike that of the Old Covenant with its twelve. It is a necessity arising from the meaning of the Institution as explained by the Apostles. As there is but one literal body and this body has many members; so there must be but one bread! Paul insists upon this in 1 Corinthians 12:20. The singular use of the word loaf is defended on the grounds of a grammatical rule of Greek. The Greek word artos, especially when joined with words of number, always signify a loaf, In Matthew 16:9; “Do you not remember the five loaves;?” there is a quantity inferred, but if there is no quantity it is indispensably rendered loaf. Thus we say one loaf, seven loaves; not one bread, seven breads. “Because there is one loaf”, says Paul, we must consider the whole congregation as one body. Here the Apostle reasons from what is more plain to what is less plain; from what was established to what was not so fully established in the minds of the Corinthians. There was absolutely no dispute about the one loaf; therefore, there ought to be none about the one body!! It is then, an established rule that there is but one loaf. The apostle establishes his argument by a reference to it as an established fact. An established fact that there is but ONE body and that body is the Church of Christ of which there are many members has to follow logically and Biblically!!
Christians are members of the house of family of Christ, Hebrews 3:6; 1 Peter 2:5, and are called and constituted a holy and royal priesthood, and may, therefore, bless God for the Lord’s table, its loaf, and cup—approach it without fear and partake of it with joy, as often as He commands, in remembrance of the death of their Lord and Savior. We, “as living stones, are built up a spiritual temple, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices most acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

The Lord’s Supper Part 11

As there is an analogy between the Jewish holy place and the Christian house of God; so there is an analogy between the furniture of the first tabernacle or holy place, and those who officiated in it, and the furniture of the Christian house of God and those who officiate in it. “In the first tabernacle, says Paul, which is called holy, there were the candlestick, and the table, and the showbread,” or the loaves of the presence. On the golden table every Sabbath day were placed twelve loaves which were exhibited there for one week, and on the next Sabbath they were exchanged by twelve fresh loaves sprinkled with frankincense. The loaves which were removed from the table were eaten by the priests. These were called in the Hebrew “the loaves of the faces,” or the loaves of the presence. This emblem of the abundance of spiritual food in the presence of God for all who dwell in the holy place, stood always upon the golden table furnished by the twelve tribes, even in the wilderness. The light in the first tabernacle was not from without, but from the seven lamps placed on the golden candlestick; emblematic of the perfect light not derived from this world which is also emphatically enjoyed in the house of God!
If, then, in the emblematic house of God, to which corresponds the Christian house of God, there was not only a table overlaid with gold, always spread, and on it displayed twelve large loaves, or cakes, sacred memorials and emblems of the glory of God’s bounty and grace; shall we say that in that house, over which Jesus is a Son, there is not to stand always a table more precious than gold covered with a richer supper for the holy and royal priesthood which the Lord has instituted who may always enter into the holy place consecrated by Himself? If the Jewish priesthood, which could not get sins forgiven, had a loaf which represented each son of Jacob, would not God, the Father not have a loaf/cake/portion of bread for His only begotten Son as a memorial when the priesthood, which could get absolution of sin, assembled??
But we are not dependent of analogies, nor far fetched inferences, for the proof of this position. Paul, who perfectly understood both the Jewish and Christian Institutions, tells us, that there is in the Christian temple a table, appropriately called the Lord’s Table, as a part of its furniture. He informs those who were in danger of being polluted by idolatry, “that they could not be partakers of the Lord’s table and the table of demons.” 1 Corinthians 10:21. In all his allusions to this table in this connection, he represents it as continually approached by those in the Lord’s house. “The cup of the Lord” and “the bread,” for which thanks were continually offered, are the furniture of this table.
The apostle Paul reminds the saints in Corinth of their familiarity with the Lord’s table, in speaking of it as common as the meetings of the brotherhood. “The cup of blessing for which we bless God, is it not the joint participation of the blood of Christ? In this style we speak of things common and usual, never in this manner of things uncommon nor unusual. It is not the cup which we have received with thanks; nor is it the bread which we have broken; but which we DO break. But all that we aim at here is now accomplished; for it has been shown that, in the Lord’s house there is always the table of the Lord. It is scarcely necessary to add that if it be shown that in the Lord’s house there is always the Lord’s table, as a part of the furniture, it must always be there when the disciples meet, unless it can be shown that only some occasions require its presence and others its absence; or that the Lord is poorer or more inhospitable at one time than at another; that He is not able always to keep a table, or to cheap to furnish it for His friends. This would be contemptuous for even the lowest of Lords!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 10

With all the information given concerning the “Lambs Bride” –as in the gospels, so in the book of Revelation one would expect to see the Lord’s Supper BEFORE the establishment of the “Bride adorned for her husband”. So in chapter 19 of that great book, we see the invitation to those who were “called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.” Revelation 19:9 The bride, church, wife of Christ is called the new Jerusalem, in Revelation 21:9-10, said to be the Lamb’s wife, was ready to come to the earth, “for the nation of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: And the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defiles, neither works abomination, nor a lie; but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” I underscore it because that is how Christ referred to His church in Matthew 16:18.
Christ took His bride, the church, as His own. He bought her and paid for her with His own blood, Acts 20:28, He joined her to Himself and they became one spirit, 1 Corinthians 6:17, He gave her His name, and He has a spiritual relationship with her. She bears fruit to God the Father through Him, Romans 7:4 and He put His ring on her finger solemnizing the covenant which He commands His children to respect and participate in every first day of the week; for it brings joy and completion to Him as she partakes!! This song of joy is heard four times in chapter 19 of Revelation, verses 1, 3, 4, and 6 and not elsewhere in the New Testament. The word Alleluia (the word of the song sung) means “praise you Jehovah.” I like to take all Jehovah’s Witnesses to these verses for they say Christ is not Jehovah!! and watch them twist and squirm in their chairs. Its equivalent is frequent in the Old Testament. This song is first heard in Chapter 5:9-13; again in chapter 7:9-12; and the third time in chapter 14:2-3. In chapter 5:9-13, Christ is pictured as a Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. He comes into the midst of the four and twenty elders, the four beasts or living creatures, the presence of God and the throne. He takes the book from the hand of Him who sits upon the throne. The book is sealed with seven seals and no man in heaven or on earth is able to open the book or even to look thereon. John begins to weep, but he is assured that “the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof.” Therefore, they sing a song of loud praise to His name, “worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.” In chapter 7, they are singing the same praises because He has sealed all the servants of God and brought salvation to them. He has opened the book that was sealed. In chapter 14, the 144,000 sing His praise because He has gotten victory over the beast and those who have His number and name. In Chapter 19, they sing His praise because He has judged the great whore and avenged His servants at her hand. God has given unto them salvation, glory, honor, and power. The four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God who sat on the throne, saying, Amen, Alleluia. Voices came out of the throne saying, “Praise our God all you saints, and you that fear Him, both small and great.” Multitudes swelled in great praise and announced that Christ reigned omnipotently. His wife had made herself ready and the marriage supper of the Lamb had come. She was dressed in priestly attire, Matthew 22:13, and could partake in the blessings that LOVE had made possible!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 9

Paul said, “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you a chaste virgin to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:2 “I espoused” means to fit together, to join. Christ is the one husband; the church is His one wife!! The symbol of this union signifies the bond that binds us to Christ.
The Lord’s Supper is the wedding ring on the finger of the bride the Church which reminds us of our oaths of allegiance and fidelity we have taken. The Lord’s Supper serves as a reminder every time we assemble on the first day of the week to re-commit ourselves.
Paul also said, “But he that is joined to the Lord is one spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:17 Just as man and wife joined together become one flesh; we are one spirit when joined to Christ. The physical marriage is a picture of the spiritual marriage. Outside of marriage, without committing adultery, a woman cannot be joined to a man—having no joining, there is no symbol which would show that joining. They who are not “joined” to Christ would never meet to be reminded of that “joining.” How could any it be any clearer– be said any clearer– Christ and the church of Christ are married!! If one is not a member of the Church of Christ, having been bought by the blood of the only begotten Son of God, there is nothing that reminds them or obligates them to this “joining.” Denominationalism would have no such remembrance for they are in union with something or someone else. The symbol of that union would not be the same.
In Ephesians 5:22-23, Paul, in no uncertain terms, sets forth the facts of the church and Christ being married. Husband and wife in their relationship of marriage are fashioned after Christ and the church, not Christ and the church after man and woman. We were sanctified and cleansed “that we might be presented to Him as a glorious church.” Ephesians 5:27 In this union, Paul said, “For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.” Ephesians 5:30 It is not possible for anyone to use stronger language concerning the facts of the marriage. This was the original language of Adam, “this is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.” Genesis 2:23
In Revelation 21:9-10, the angel said to John, “Come hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.” This high mountain, this great city, this holy Jerusalem, is the Church of Christ!! When seen here it is not going up to heaven but coming down out of heaven. It is the tabernacle spoken of in Acts 15:16– “After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle (house, the place and kingdom over which David reigns as King) of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up.” “Upon this rock I will build My church, so said our Lord, and the gates of death shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18. This church is the mountain of the Lord’s house spoken of by Isaiah in Isaiah 2:2; the New Jerusalem of Galatians 4:26 and Hebrews 12:22-23.
This new Jerusalem spoken of in Revelation 21:9-10, is said to be the Lamb’s wife which had now come to the earth, “for the nation of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: And kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it….And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.” There shall be neither kings nor nations after Christ returns again. When Christ returns to this earth to GET His saints, not return to GET married!! “He shall come with the sound of a great trumpet…and we who are alive and remain shall be changed and caught up into the air TO BE with the Lord, and so shall we ever BE with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17
