The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper Part 8

The metaphor of marriage as a relation between Christ and His kingdom or the church is not new in the God’s Revelation. Jesus taught it in many places: Matthew 22:12-5; Luke 14:16-24; Matthew 8:10-12; Revelation 19:1-1-10 just to name a few. Neither is it different from the other teachings of the apostle Paul. His letters are filled with this metaphor or symbol. Paul said, “Wherefore, my brethren, you also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that you should be married to another, even to Him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruits unto God.” Romans 7:4 The church at Rome was not with His significant other, she in fact was married!! Not being legitimately married she could not have the privilege of bearing fruit-giving the message of the new birth to those who were begotten by the message of the Spirit!! She was married to Christ—“to Him whom God raised from the dead.” Unless the marriage of the Lamb was a reality, the wedding ring on her finger, the Lord’s Supper, would not and will not today, be of any significance.
Every man who marries a woman gives her something of significance between themselves that shows the covenant of loyalty, love, and fidelity. This item is usually presented to the bride by the groom at the wedding. This item (usually a ring in our society) is of great value (maybe not financially, but from the heart) to this couple. When given usually a ceremony is recited, which, when beautifully done will bring tears to his bride’s eyes. “Wear this, in remembrance of me” is usually the understood request. This ring is worn with overwhelming pride by the new bride. One can see her many times holding out her left hand looking at the ring with that blushing pride because the ring reminds her of the love of her husband. Every other man that has anything to him, when he sees that ring on her left hand, third finger; never tries to court-entice-or form a romantic relationship with her to draw her away from her husband. If that were to occur, the safety net given the bride by the groom would have to be stepped over. She unconsciously would be reminded of her oaths and vows once she saw the ring!! How beautiful if the plan of God for us His children who get the privilege every first day of the week to again be reminded of the confession of faith, the body that was sacrificed, and the blood that was shed which does for us the same!! How can we step over the line and become unfaithful to our Lord when every Sunday we commit ourselves again to His love and sacrifice looking into His face, as we partake?? We have to admit to one fact—we forsake Him intentionally, not accidentally, we have to ignore His ring!!
The purpose in being married to the risen Christ is to bring forth fruit unto God. Unless we bear fruit unto God, we shall be cut off, cast into the fire and burned. John 15:6 Failure to bear fruit unto God was the cause of Israel’s destruction. Matthew 21:33 Israel was married to God spiritually and divorced. Jeremiah 3:13-25 Because of her unfaithfulness she was removed from her estate (of marriage). If we follow her example, having been married-become unfaithful to that union, we too will be divorced and set adrift in the world without anyone to provide, protect, or love us!! It has to be understood that the bride, or wife, cannot bear fruit outside of wedlock or she commits adultery. Therefore, if we are not married to Christ—we cannot bear fruit unto Him, in which case we will be cast off and burned or we would commit spiritual adultery and will be set adrift and damned. If the Law of Moses is our historical precedent, once we have been married to Christ—we can never again be brought back into that union!! Deuteronomy 24:4, Matthew 7:23; 2 Peter 2:21; 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12.

The Lord’s Supper Part 6

Multitudes had assembled in great praise at the announcement that Christ reigned Omni potently. His wife had made herself ready (she had been clothed as she was washed in water where she was made acceptable by His blood) and the marriage supper of the Lamb had come. She was dressed in pure and white linen (the clothes of priest), which is the righteousness of the saints. A command was given unto John from the angel who directed him: “Write! Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” John is assured that these are the true (revealed which had been hidden from the beginning of time) sayings (message) of God.
This had to follow the destruction of the great city, that is, the judgment of the great whore, which is Jerusalem, or they could not have sung the praise of the judgment God had judged against the great whore to avenge His servants of her wickedness.
The marriage and the marriage supper had to come the same day. They are all part of the same event. The day Christ married the Church, that same day the marriage supper was introduced, participated in, and celebrated. The partaking of the Lord’s Supper by the Church of Christ was partaken on the day of Pentecost. “And they continued in the apostles doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Acts 2:42 Many use Acts 20:7 as the proof text for partaking of the Supper on the first day of the week. Acts 20:7 is the example showing the command was obeyed!! If Acts 20:7 is our command, we cannot partake—for everything had to begin at Jerusalem!! I use to hear great preachers preach about great events that happened on the day of Pentecost, AD 33. All they said was true, BUT, they left out the instituting of the Lord’s Supper that took place that day!! Our people have been taught Acts 20:7 and have not been taught Acts 2:42 and are embarrassed not to understand Revelation 19:9-10.
The omnipotent reign of Christ, the marriage of the Lamb, and the observance of Lord’s Supper came the same day!! In Revelation the 19th chapter, they were announced in the SAME VERSE!! They came after the spiritual judgment of the great whore and the destruction of the great city-Revelation 19:2. Listen to this verse; “Salvation, and glory, and honor, and power, unto the Lord our God.” All this took place WHEN Jesus had by Himself “purged our sins and sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” Hebrews 1:3 This same day Christ was “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” Romans 1:4, Matthew 28:18-20. This same day the Church of Christ began on Earth as the Holy Spirit, described as a “rushing mighty wind,” infused the 12 apostles to tell man for the first time what had been told in parables (but now in reality) what they must do to be saved. This same day they that “gladly received the message of the Holy Spirit through the mouths of the apostles in response from a prayer to the Ancient of Days from THE WORD, were baptized IN WATER and the first souls that had been sinners could NOW be invited to break bread with the Godhead!! And this they did, when, after 3,000 men (they did not count women and those under 30 years of age) were attending the first official worship assembly of the new Bride of Christ (He had just divorced physical Israel 53 days earlier and not given her a writing of divorcement). On this same day His bride preached, prayed, partook, gave, and sang praises to their NEW King!!; for they were now members of the greatest institution to ever grace this planet!!
The New Jerusalem, spoken of in Revelation 21:9-10, said to be the Lamb’s wife, was now also on Earth AND in the third Heaven!! Sin would separate them NO MORE!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 5

Invited to the Supper of a King, President, or world-wide statesman! What a thought!! “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings.” (How do you like that for an introduction??!!) Think something important is about to take place? In every instance in the kingdoms of men, the introduction is only as important as the dramatization surrounding the event. Here, in the 19th chapter of Revelation, the treatment of the announcement about to be made is rivaled only by the way in which it was announced. “Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns (has sat down to reign); let us (who are the us?) be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready….And he said unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. For this is the true sayings (the un-revealed, now revealed which were prophesied by His servants—this is the reason He came so as Adam typified, He could marry His bride and bring forth seed!) Rev 19:6-10 Continuing; “I saw an angel standing in the sun (how could one see an angel standing in the sun unless He was “brighter than the noon-day-Sun”?) He is the light shed abroad for men on earth. Rev 19:18 (Remember how bright Moses face shone when receiving the Ten Commandments? His face shone as the sun when he came down from the mountain. Exodus 34:29-35) How much more would an angel’s face be as bright as the sun who dwells in the presence of the Father? This angel is announcing the invitation to all nations to eat the marriage supper of the Lamb. Those who are invited are the ones mentioned in Rev 18:9 that are kings, captains, mighty men, horses and their riders, flesh of all men both bond and free, and both small and great. It is very important to notice that the ONLY thing served is flesh. Is that something you would eat? We would expect bread and wine for this was a wedding feast! What does all this mean??
Flesh is not served at a wedding feast! This is the invitation given in Matthew 22:1-9, it took place as promised by Christ to His disciples-a table at which His memorial would be served, 1 Corinthians 10:16-21, at this table they were to eat and drink, Luke 22:24-30, which began on the day of Pentecost, Acts 2:42. What, then is the eating of flesh? Jesus had said “I have meat to eat that you know not of,” John 4:32 Like some of us, the disciples could not decipher this language so they asked, “Has any man brought Him anything to eat?” The meat was fellowship or communion with the Father. Jesus uses it again in Chapter 6. “This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that man may eat thereof, and not die. The I AM is the bread of life which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world….verily, verily, I say unto you, except you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” John 6:50-63 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us His flesh to eat”? (vs 52) If one tried to analyze this, as many do the eating of the flesh in Revelation 19, he would be just as confused as were the Jews, Jesus used the term “eat” as fellowship with Him through faith. Verse 47 substantiates this clearly, the man who believed (kept on keeping His commandments) would have everlasting life (for he is eating of the Tree of Life). In verse 53, Christ said, “Except you eat of My flesh and drink of My blood you have no life in you.” Therefore, the eating and drinking is not eating and drinking, it is fellowship in obedience to His commandments.

The Lord’s Supper Part 4

Jesus had waited some great length of time to fulfill what was seen in the Garden of Eden, the Tree of Life. He had been on this planet for 33 years and had participated in the memorial of the release from Egypt and no doubt noticed the indifference of those who ate of that lamb on the night of the Passover. Customs had changed, men no longer had to eat with their families, Christ ate the last-ever Passover with His disciples (including Judas) commanded by Moses. The wedding ring on the finger of the Jewish Covenant was to be prominently viewed for the last time. It is hard to imagine the patience of Christ in bringing about His Father’s Will. Think about the previous year (for this seemed to be a regular occurrence with Christ and the disciples), and the year before (which had to be the first of this practice; and think about being Christ. How did He keep His mouth from blurting out the information that had to be so constantly on His mind? How empty He must have felt at each Passover to feel, so empty as He left the Old Covenant meal knowing this remembrance was corrupt comparing it to that that He would introduce. Conjecture and questioning left aside, one has to appreciate His emotions leading up to this—the time of all times. Imagine going to this Supper for the past two years and knowing that Judas was to be seated right beside you in the most honored place and especially this specific night of all nights!! No disciple was close enough to Christ for Him to let anyone gather from His demeanor that anything would have been out of order.
“Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart out of this world,” is just too powerful to overlook!! I wish some of my brethren would read this passage and stop and listen to what it says!! “When Jesus knew” is just too powerful for anyone to think He did not have His mind already made up before His prayers in Gethsemane!! How long “before” the feast of the Passover He knew? How about around an eternity??
Some have spent their last night before an operation, leaving for active service, at the bedside of our mothers and fathers immediately before death, and can understand how this special event would not want to be wasted on eating beside a traitor!! Some have been unfortunate enough to endure these events with those we would rather not have had there. There are things we cannot control but this is not so of our Lord and King. I think Gethsemane just might have been one of the easiest things the Master went through that night!! Had Judas fully made up his mind when he sat down by the Lord to betray Him is not really important, the fact that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit had their minds made up—the time was NOW, THAT is what was important!! All things were ready, if Satan and his henchmen were not, God was!! Jesus knew these things before the Passover Supper began, the time of surprises was over, God had been working on this play for over 6,000 years. He that had synchronized the heavens and the earth, the sun and moon, the stars and the planets had this whole night choreographed to perfection!! You see, Jesus was on His way back home and no man, angel, nor any type of creation was going to stop Him. “When Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father,” the Devil may have not had all things planned but God DID!! Listen: “I foresaw the Lord always before My face; for He is on My right hand, that I should not be moved.” Acts 2:25 Again: “Father, the hour is come: glorify Thy Son, that Thy Son also may glorify Thee.” John 17:1 Judas was a part of the plan, but not in any sense a controlling part!!

The Lord’s Supper Part 3

“Knowing He came from God and was going to God” Jesus came to a long anticipated inauguration that only the family can be involved, the introduction of the memorial of His covenant-the Lord’s Supper. It can not go unnoticed that the preparation of the last Passover was not only delicate, it was completely thorough, completely organized and set up by Christ Himself, even down to the colt that had never been ridden. This kind of thoroughness was not unlike Christ– in His introductory baptism by John the Baptist, His going to Lazarus funeral service, we see the same pattern. Not only choreographed completely by Christ, this Supper is to be in a special place, special people are to be there, and when special planning is involved usually special things happen, special blessings are given. This particular Supper will not disappoint anyone who studies its events.
Jesus had had meals before with the disciples, it was an occurrence that took place once a year and commemorated a special night in Jewish lore. Interestingly, death was the subject and Christ was the messenger on both occasions these meals were attended. As with the Passover, so with the Lord’s Supper, both were to be set as a religious ceremony with one element being constant, the bread. In the Passover, the bread was unleavened-the reason not being explained in that covenant as types never satisfy the aspirant of meaning and in the old covenant the bread was coupled with bitter herbs and spices which showed the arduous journey that had to be taken before its reality came into existence. In the Lord’s Supper the wine of joy was put in the place of bitterness and disappointment which makes the participant glad that he or she has been called to remember such a joyous occasion as the remembrance of the forgiveness of sin. Other meals took place three times during Christ earthly ministry to which I will only call your attention that bread was also in these: the feeding of the 5,000 and 4,000 and the silent supper hosted by Christ for Simon Peter. In the feeding of the 1,000’s the event took place with NO planning. When man handles something, this is so. The situation demanded the events while the meal which was hosted for Simon was totally planned with every element purposely orchestrated to perfection by our Lord. But, the last Supper hosted by Christ was the only Supper that had previously been pictured before covenants were made with man available only for the sinless. It has been un-noticed by many but had residency in the Garden of Eden.
The purpose for the Tree of Life has been open to speculation by many. That it was there is not questioned. That it was not for those who had ever sinned has not been questioned, for they never partook. That they knew of its purpose is also known, for God said “lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever” they drove them out of the Garden. God left man with his tongue which was given man only to bless God and look what he has done with it. James 3:9 If its name means anything, what it is, is what it is called. In the Garden, life was interrupted by sin. Until sin, physical life was questioned or understood. Eve testified to the fact that she and Adam were told they would die, physically, but it didn’t bother them for they knew they were in a process of transmutation, that which one day the saints of God will participate- in the resurrection!! Satan repeats the promise of physical death by saying in the Hebrew: “Dieing, you are dieing, already”! Genesis 3:3 Death is as much a part of man’s existence as birth. In the Garden sin was not, so Adam and Eve run out for they were naked and until God could cover that nakedness, they could be in His presence.

The Lord’s Supper Part 2

The most high God dwells not in temples made with human hands; yet He condescended in the age of types to have a temple erected for Himself, which He called His House, and glorified it with the symbols of His presence. In allusion to this, the Christian community, organized under the government of His Son, is called His House and Temple. “ But Christ as a Son over His own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto end.” Hebrews 3:6 And again, “Know ye not, that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” If any man defile the temple of God, him God shall destroy; for the temple of God is holy; which temple you are.” 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Again, “Now, therefore, you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. And are built upon the foundation (notice it is singular) of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone: In whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto an holy temple in the Lord.” Ephesians 2:19-21
In the type, called the Jewish Tabernacle or Temple, the Church of Christ occupies the middle space between the outer court and the holiest of all. “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.” Hebrews 9:24 The common priests went always into the first tabernacle or holy place, and the high-priest once a year into the holiest of all. Our great High Priest did not go in multiple times, He went in once and for all into the true “holiest of all, into the presence of God, and has permitted us Christians, as a royal priesthood, as a chosen race, to enter always into the only holy place now on earth—the Church of Christ. To know what church is the representative fulfillment of the primal type of Moses, one has but to look at the furniture and elements in the Old Testament “holy place”—and notice it stayed in that place every time the priest came in to worship!!
There is an analogy between the Jewish holy place and the House of God; so there is an analogy between the furniture of the first tabernacle or holy place, and those who officiated in it; and the furniture of the Christian house of God, and those who officiate in her. “In the first tabernacle,” says Paul, “which is called holy, there were the candlestick, and the table, and the showbread,” or also called the “loaves of His presence.” On the golden table every Sabbath day were placed twelve loaves, which exhibited there for one week, and on the next Sabbath they were substituted by twelve fresh fresh loaves sprinkled over with frankincense. The loaves which were removed from the table were eaten by the priests. These were called in the Hebrew “the loaves of the faces,” or the loaves of the presence. This emblem of the abundance of spiritual food in the presence of God for all who dwell in the holy place stood always upon the golden table furnished by the twelve tribes, even in the wilderness. The light in the first tabernacle was not from without, but from the seven lamps placed on the golden candlestick; emblematic of the perfect light, not derived from this world, which is enjoyed in the house of God.
Since the type is the pattern for the anti-type, not only was there a table overlaid with gold, always spread, and on it displayed twelve large loaves—memorials of God’s bounty and grace; in the House that Jesus is head should there not always be spread the table with one loaf, more precious than gold, which would represent the richest meal ever available for the priest who enter there to worship?? Was there ever were a Sabbath where no bread was displayed, a tabernacle in which a table was not spread??

The Lord’s Supper

Man was not made for the Lord’s Supper observance, the Lord’s Supper observance was made for man. None but a master of the human totality, perfectly skilled in all the aspects of our species- considering the spiritual, physical, and moral endowments of which we are made, could perfectly adapt an institution to man in reference to all that he is, and to all that he is destined to become, but God!! That it is of divine origin has never been questioned by saint or cynic. Its observance has never been questioned only WHO partakes and HOW OFTEN!! This is one of the major differences between those who follow Christ and those who follow men. He who must attentively “work out his salvation with fear and trembling” must contemplate just and true answers to all the questions posed on this subject as he finds himself before the God of all the Earth, partaking of its elements or he eats and drinks damnation to himself!!
Man is totally incapable of originating such an observance and history is silent to any other observance like it. Something so seemingly unnoticeable and estranged from the other events of that night (when the creature revolted against its Creator) has ever been chronicled. That it was recorded at all is more than remarkable, it is providential, an incident calendared only by God in the events of such a fateful evening. That it would become THE reason man’s Creator would shine such a flood light on its observance teaching damnation of those who would reject its observance, shows it not of human origin!! He who most attentively and profoundly reads the divine record himself, and contemplates the picture which the Lord of this Institution has drawn of Himself, will be most willing to confess BY PARTAKING with his mouth, Romans 10:13, WEEKLY!!
Man is ignorant of himself and is not a good judge of himself. What could persuade man that a human being, in any age, or in any country, could be so far superior to himself as an institution where such praise and pain is exhibited? No man will allow the self-worship of his equal. This feast is beyond the rituals of any institution of remembrance before established and is as much superior to anything man has espoused– as the creation of the sun, moon, and stars is beyond man’s abilities to make them. As the eye of man cannot see itself; the ear of man cannot hear itself; or the understanding of man discern itself. There IS an institution of God who sees like the human eye, who hears like the human ear, and judges the man as he partakes involving His God–bringing that man to his knees before that God, only the Supper of the Lord. He who made the eye for man, can He not see? He who made the ear of man, can He not hear? He who made the heart of man, can He not know? We NEED to know how God sees us!! It is not as supernatural to adapt a system to man as it is to create him? See the wisdom, bringing the WHOLE man in control each week?? To suit the outside to the inside requires as much wisdom as to suit the inside to God. The outer man exists for the inner man. The Lord’s Supper takes the outward participation past the outward expression and makes it an expression of the inward man which glorifies his deserving God. This foundation of the public worship service also exhibits the wonder of its Creator-Love. Through this Supper, God prepares the human spirit for its future habitation. Also, man in all his non-functional forms of worship could never design a system of religion that causes the outside participation to maintain the inward man, when partaken properly. These are among the many reasons we must be thankful to be invited to this Supper. It is truly our “built-in” maintenance for the long trip, home!! It is like insurance and every Sunday, we get to partake of a little more insurance!! Accidents happen—don’t miss!!
