Legalism vs Liberalism Part 13

The Army of God fights “the good fight of faith to lay hold of eternal life.” 1 Timothy 6:12 When one “lays hold” of something, we take possession of, attain; rescue from peril, succor, it becomes our most pressing thing to which we aspire, our only goal in life. Whatever we had when we came into this world, we challenge nothing as a debt to anything that is due us, for naked came we into the world and naked we shall return. Everything we have had since, we are obliged to the providence of God for it; but He that gave may take what and when He pleases. We have had our beings, our bodies, our lives provided us, care taken of us, having been fed with food convenient to us; therefore let us trust in God for the remaining part of our lives. A shroud, a coffin, and a grave: these are all that the richest man in the world can have from his millions of dollars, we should not covet these, for they are not much when compared to that realm for which we reach! All these, we must leave behind. What we will not leave behind is what we have sown. Because God gives us the necessary supports of life, we ought to be content therewith, though we have not the ornaments and delights we have gained, but as the Psalmist cries out; “Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me.” Psalms 30:8
Those who set their hearts on the wealth of this world, who care not for right or wrong, will “fall into temptation and a snare.” 1 Timothy 6:9 That for which they have spent all their time sowing, none will reap from them the benefit we yearn, eternal life. If we do not understand our place and position in this world as the ambassadors of another world to come, we will make this mischievous world the final goal for all our living. These things “drown men in destruction and perdition,” they are worthless when the exchange comes; for all we have, we will present to the Trader-at-the-gate in hopes to receive what He has for we have used what time He has given us to purchase that life, that life called, the eternal!!
Every plant has a root. The root is the foundation of and on which our life stands. The root of evil, apostasy, cowardice, and fear will never be good trading material. When we have a chance to STAND, we had better show which Army we represent. Many who have money, hate it, for it proves itself not to be an even medium of exchange even while here on this earth. But we, who are members of the great Army of the King, conduct ourselves according to the picture of the goal we have in our heart. From the root comes the stalk, from the stalk comes the fruit and every plant is determined worthy of joy or destruction by what fruit it bears. How many days do we live wondering if the air we have been given was used for the goal of our lives?
Whether we attain or loose, we will fight. Those who will get to heaven must fight under the right Commander. In this Army we will fight corruption, temptation, illicit pleasures. If we unfortunately join the other army, we will fight; so we chose the Army of God and Stand for His cause for all our lives we will fight!! The powers of darkness, the pleasures of sin and illegal sex, the vice of ill-gotten wealth will never come easy, so, if we must show your might and fight, why not fight for the RIGHT!!
We must “lay hold”! “Hold fast that which you have, that no man take your crown.” Revelation 3:11 Make sure you do not lose your grip!! Some slacken their grip for things they will never be able to trade in on or for eternal life (be it a wife, a missed service opportunity, forfeited example, or a squandered investment in this world and its pleasures). We must make sure we do not give up so much we cannot gain!! To gain a little peace in this world and lose peace with Christ in that one to come is poor trading!! Ours is a good fight, it is for a good cause, and it will gain for us a crown of righteousness. The other fight is not good, honorable, nor gainful. The crown IS eternal life. It can slide out of your grip!!

Liberalism vs Legalism Part 12

The Army of God was called to the front lines in A D 33 at 9:00 am on the day of Pentecost. That was nearly 2000 years ago, now. Our Commander in Chief had just received a new position which He had had delivered Him at the throne of God, the Father, the Ancient of Days when He arrived on the cloud in His human body of flesh “and they brought Him (Christ) near (Christ was summoned) before Him (God, the Father).” Daniel 7:13-14 He, who had just returned to His home, was the “Lord, God, mighty in battle.” Psalms 24:8 He had come back as the tsaba (He who was going to war as the Head of an organized army (host). When He arrived He asked the Father for the “heathen.” Psalms 2:8 He had told His disciples, “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, He will guide you into all the truth.” John 14:16;16:13 “They (the apostles, who had been baptized by Christ in the Holy Spirit) were all with one accord (one mind, one passion) in one place…when suddenly there came a sound as rushing mighty wind, and there appeared cloven (distributed) tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4
For what did the Holy Spirit come? To launch and sustain the attack. The Army of God would engage the enemy for the first time!! This day, Hell reeled and rocked!! The commanding General, the Holy Spirit had recorded for our learning the words of one of the field generals, Simon Peter and the way to the blood of Christ was made known!! Acts 2:38 On this day a beach head was established in the stronghold of Judaism, in its capital city, in its place of worship and 3,000 men obeyed the gospel, later the number became in-numeral. Revelation 7:9 Once the fighting began (it was a contest for the minds of men) the call to battle has never been rescinded!! The trumpet WILL sound, but then the battle has ended. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 The Church of Christ is STILL at war, STILL in the battle for the souls of men, and STILL ON THE BATTLEFIELD, if, it is the Church of Christ!!
There are those who now declare compromise, peace, and fellowship with the denominational world. James 4:4 They have decided to sue for peace. They want to “break the tie that binds” and enter into a Pax Romana (a 200 year period of peace during the reign of Rome where not a battle was fought) with our religious neighbors. They want a gospel they call “grace,”going to their places of assembly, using their preachers (who themselves have never obeyed the gospel of Christ) to preach to Christ’s assemblies, and engage the youth (the naive) in “love games” while advising those of us who have never heard the bugle of retreat, to STAND DOWN!! (Our Secretary of Defense has too many financial ties with the enemy and will sacrifice anyone who gets in the way!!) And what does the Commander in Chief think of this ploy? “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then, because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue (vomit forth) thee out of My mouth.”
The new army will not even take the field of battle. They “lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; that chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but they are not grieved at the affliction of Joseph.” Amos 6:4-6 They are puffed up with pride, and rocked asleep in carnal security, and they have trusted in the wrong metropolis, the hill of Shenir has become with them as good as the hill of Zion ever was!! Great men as well as great nations have a tendency to overvalue themselves and to overlook their neighbor’s wrong doctrinal teachings so they can “brother” one another!! They preach “Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the Lord.” Amos 6:10-14

Legalism vs Liberalism Part 11

It is an unspoken rule. It is one of those topics which brethren never discover. It causes many members of the church today to squirm in their seats, and get defensive and nobody seems to know, why! It is the reason many brethren want to “change” the posture of the preaching and welcome into their hearts preachers “to itch their ears.” Without question, if unchallenged or un-noticed, the message delivered will take a skew to the left in an effort to destroy the “sound preaching” of the “once delivered faith” from years back. Who is my hero?
The “changelings” among us have different heroes! You will find them amazingly uncomfortable with the preaching and preachers of a generation, past. They have unfortunately been taught the doctrine of compromise, they fear controversy, and have never been taught to fall in love with the truth!! These brethren are blissfully ignorant of the battles waged which delivered their forefathers from denominationalism and have been taught to make fun of these “old-timers” and the ignorance of the “days gone bye.” Walking into their libraries or viewing their computers, one will find the false teachers and false teaching all over the place, yet not find those who “led their fathers and mothers out of Egypt into the promise land.” Those “extremists of yore” have not much esteem in their eyes. Alexander Campbell, Ben Franklin, Foy Wallace, James Bales, nor R. L. Whiteside have been replaced with Billy Graham, John Bunyan, Max Lucado, or Charles Spurgeon. The fields of debate were the greatest tool the church of the late 1930-50’s had, has been “quietly put to sleep.” Their favorite refrains are: “we will not hurt your feelings,” “you can ask us a question and you will not receive a mean-spirited answer that is intended to convince you of your error,” (that part is not mentioned) or “we are just Christians.” These “moneychangers” were driven out of the Temple, but strode back in on velvet carpet!! Jesus did a harmful thing to them that we will NEVER do; He overturned their tables. Matthew 21:12-13 He announced woes on the scribes and Pharisees. Matthew 23:13-33 Confrontation was an art the Lord was masterful in using, today “running and hiding” is our art of the day. When brought before the Sanhedrin, Peter cried out; “We ought to obey God, rather than men.” Acts 5:29 You will not find that attitude or art being utilized in the pulpits of today’s “apostles of appeasement,” one wonders why! After all, controversy calls attention to the differences between us and our “denominational brethren.” The “doctrine of appeasement” when seen will revoke their license to “bring the church into the 21st century.” Like Pilate, they would just like to “wash their hands with their “grace and dry them with luv” so they can join all their brothers in the quest to “preach unity”!!
For years we seen “sheep leave the flock” and possibly never know why. We have heard pleas for faithfulness in keeping the plants watered in front of “our church,” but never do we see the Prodigal son come back home, in fact, we are going to his house for supposed “bible (?) studies.” Achan has buried his gold in our tents and Joshua is not losing battles (because there are none being fought), and the souls of the indifferent are “satisfied in a United Church Pentecostal,” yet we never hear from the announcements, prayers, or messages concern about Mary Smith or Sam Jones whose eternal welfare may hang on our concern!! We have bought that line that “as long as you are churched, somewhere, they are fine.” Today, when faithful brethren attempt to stand firm for biblical truth, and defend the gospel, you never hear of this report, you hear of how many 100’s are in attendance and how many young people attend our Sunday School drama club for the next church “play” about “Abraham and the whale,” (excuse me that was Jonah) or Eve being confirmed as the next full time preacher for the downtown church or Sister James that led a beautiful closing prayer Sunday morning!

Liberalism vs Legalism Part 10

It is sad when many who profess to be Christians draw back, Luke 9:62, from bearing the sword and defending truth. If Paul had “withstood Peter to the face” as is recorded in Galatians 2:11, some of our fellows in the pulpit would have palpitations of the heart!! In every realm of our existence, let us be willing to “stand up and be counted.” The way of modern man has crept into the preaching, bulletins, radio programs, and personnel work of the body of Christ. We hear it in the songs sung in our assemblies (instead of having the depth of conviction, they have the sound of tinkling cymbals. The preaching we hear, the prayers we hear led, will never carry us to the catacombs of Rome!!
All that is necessary for evil to circumcise our preachers is to send them to a “Bible College” where men of no faith teach those who have little faith and create within them, no faith!! If the soldier of the cross remains silent, attempting not to stir up trouble, and neutral, not hurting anyone’s Bible (?) studies, we will learn again the lesson of History. Sin is like the “big bad wolf,” run from him and he will “eat you up,” confront him and he “will flee from you.” Sometimes we have to remember to “weed out the garden” so the fruits of righteousness can flourish— “I withstood him to the face, for he was to be blamed.” We must use the insecticide called “the Gospel” to kill off the deadly roots. If our preachers fear the results of this “poison for denominationalism” and want to join in with those who are not of the truth, we will end up in the cesspool called Hell!! EVIL WILL NOT GO AWAY IF WE JUST IGNORE IT!! Our desire must be to “glorify God.” We have to come to some brutal decisions, one must refuse to attend where the filth of false doctrine is sold! We are not interested in “making waves” or “causing confusion,” we may know better; we are interested in the young Christian setting beside us in the pew, our son or daughter?? Noah did not get to be the only adult teacher on the Ark because of his ego!!
“Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, ‘When you are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan; then shall you drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, molten images, pluck down all their places of worship. Destroy their false doctrines. But if you will not, and you let them remain (and their false doctrines), they shall become pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall show hostility toward you. Moreover, it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.” Numbers 33:54-55
We cannot “Satan-proof” our youth of today, but when we introduce the “rock and roll” type music, the conversational prayers, the casual breaking of bread, and the giving ‘just what I have left’ as “the type of Christianity we espouse;” and say “every church of Christ is not like this one,” does that make it right?? Lot’s “righteous spirit was vexed within him,” he just never got that message to his four girls, two of which had husbands (it seems his wife did not go along with Abrahamic faith) If Noah and his wife had been interested in a youth program (entertainment instead of worship), and a glib, sweet speaking preacher; could they have saved their three sons? His wife did not have panic attacks because there was “nobody at our little boat my age” or “Ham, Shem, or Japheth’s has nobody to grow up with”!! We must live “soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.” Titus 2:11-13 We cannot be members of the Lord’s Church who wish we were not!! If we are not careful, we will have to become missionaries in America, not evangelists!! Missionary is not a word found in the Bible, they were called “apostles.”!! The term “Gospel preacher” is fast losing its appeal. This “sue for peace” before we say something that might hurt their feelings: cool down, rein-in, gloss over type OF PREACHING is not of Christ!! “Let the light of the glorious gospel of Christ shine unto them.” 2 Corinthians 4:4

Legalism vs Liberalism Part 9

You have to watch the wording! For years liberals have been word wizards with people to hide their true beliefs. For faithful men to ask liberal preachers, “Do you believe the Bible is inspired?” the Liberal will readily respond with a positive answer, they really mean to satisfy you without really telling you what they truly believe. To them, the trick of the phrase is intended to end the discussion. They might mean the Bible is inspired, just like any other work is inspired. He has no thought that the Bible has been inspired by God. The faithful must go a little deeper. “Do you believe the Bible is inspired of God?” Again, the positive answer will be given. But again he does not mean the Bible is inspired word by word, just the overall teachings, but that the writers made mistakes and inserted their own opinions and errors because they were writing from memory. Their teaching finds the Bible no better than the false doctrine taught in denominationalism. Watch who they quote as authoritarians!!
To find out what they really believe, you must ask the right questions, and ask them in the proper order. On inspiration, you would have to ask: “do you believe the Bible is plenary, verbally, inspired Word of God?” If your questioning gets too involved with his personal faith, he will play the martyr and tell that you will misrepresent him. This will divert attention from the doctrinal question and make the true Christian feel badly about even asking about his faith at all! He will repeatedly affirm his good intentions without stating just what he believes. He cannot state his faithfulness by the Word and becomes indignant that anyone challenges his beliefs. He is what I call “a word wizard.”
Before you know it, they will declare you and those who believe the written Book a “cartel of radicals” who want to filter all that is done or taught in the church!! Of course, you have become the villain, the brother with an unkind spirit, who is challenging their faith!! Those of us who are now a “cabal of radicals” are the extremists on dogma and doctrine, and they are not willing to allow us “control” their faith. The question that has to come to our minds is “why do they want to teach non-biblical principles and false assumptions and stay in the Church of Christ?? What do they want from being in our midst? Sadly, they want to help us!! For they at one time were deceived by “well intentioned” men and they lost many a dear friend for standing up for the truth!! Vengeance!
To ignore the fact that we are to remain faithful to the Truth and allow someone to come along and introduce, teach false doctrine thinking we will lay our swords down, is an assumption we cannot allow anyone to make. Paul wrote Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:19 “Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck.” To the Ephesians, he wrote: We cannot “have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Ephesians 5:11
Where do men get the idea they can “deny the Lord that bought them?” Christ declared His “Word would never pass away,” and men “would be judged by it,” John 12:48, so how can men who reject what Christ and His apostles taught, call themselves “Christians?” Before we take our case to the “approval seekers” in denominationalism, we must try it before the Grand Master, Jesus Christ! We have received “not the words which men speak” but the words of the Spirit of the Living God!! 1 Corinthians 2:12 Wrong is wrong even if it is commonly considered acceptable. The Bible says, “Thou shall not follow a multitude to do evil.” Exodus 23:2 We are not to “enter into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.” Proverbs 4:14 Wrong is wrong even if it does not bother our conscience. The conscience can be trained to accept wrong doing. Galatians 6:7 Wrong is wrong even if you do not get caught. “The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous.” 1 Peter 3:12, “beholding the evil and the good.” Proverbs 15:3 Wrong is wrong even if others are doing worse things!

Liberalism vs Legalism Part 8

I am a legalist-I make no apology for it, even though theological sociologist call me a Pharisee, I believe that Jesus said: “this you should have done and not to have left the others undone.” The precision which originated the Bible should be treated with reverential fear. It was the Almighty sovereign God who gave it! Matthew 23:23 Christ quarrel with the Pharisees was because of their hypocrisy of God’s rules being bound on all but self and eviscerating the heart-the spirit-of the law in order to circumvent God’s intent and giving their ideas, validity. The Pharisees corollary evil was in presuming to be God, by binding rank opinions, not implications of Scripture, as law and gospel , more strongly than, the spiritual revelations. Their error was not in being doctrinally pure but in evading the law and so trying to mock God, the author of it!
When it comes to the word of God I am narrow-minded. It seems to me that I recall Jesus use of the word narrow in Matthew 7:14, when He said: “strait is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to life, and few there be that find it.” I don’t know how you can be so open-minded or broad-minded and travel on a narrow path!! That seems to me like an oxymoron.
I am against libertines when they embellish or diminish God’s word. The taking of indecent liberties with the revealed will of the Almighty is sin!! I am militant about it! I believe it has to be according to a book, chapter, and verse- written by inspiration of the Holy Spirit or nothing at all! “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ” nor is it baggage too heavy for me to carry. I have defended it in many instances and seek every opportunity that is available to me to do the same again. I pride myself in being eager to defend the gospel of Christ and bristle when those Christian brothers and sisters who should be the greatest helpers getting me to heaven throw up a caution flag for me to stop, that tell me I should use good sense and caution, consider other’s feelings, and try to drag me into the “grace-only gutter” with them! I am not interested in traditional barnyard philosophies dressed up in Sunday- go- to meeting easter egg hunts, or birthday celebrations of Christ!!
I am disturbed with all my liberal brethren can forgive everybody they disagree with on every error they face when dealing with those doctrinal liberals, can fellowship with every false denominational preacher in town, and participate in any feel-good religious exercise-but cannot fellowship me! I’m the one that is supposed to be unforgiving, unloving, unaware of God’s grace, and mean-spirited. It seems to me if they can forgive the failings of all others besides me, why do their tender hearts judge none but me? 2 Corinthians 5:11 If I know my heart, I’m more willing to extend what mercy and forgiveness is mine to extend, if only a man will repent and purpose to follow the gospel of Christ, and it alone. After all, it is upon the grace and mercy of heaven that I rest my eternal hopes! Ephesians 2:8; 4:31.
I am a legalist-I do not try to blur the line between rule-making and rule-keeping. I do not try to pray on an unsuspecting audience to teach them something that I know the word of God does not instruct them to obey. I feel it is my responsibility at any at all times to “speak where the Bible speaks,” quote what the Holy Spirit has had written, and live by the standards set by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I have no reason to follow a professor in a college, a desire to be well known, or keep my easy well-paying job just to make my situation in this life, comfortable!
I am a legalist-I do not allow the rapture, premillennialism, tongue speaking, nor the 1,000 year reign to go ignored. This is error!! I believe the Holy Spirit was right when He wrote through the apostle John: “if you bid them Godspeed, you are partakers of their evil deeds!

Legalism vs Liberalism Part 7

Within the ranks of the Lord’s church, there are those who advocate that there is a definite distinction that is to be made between “gospel” and “doctrine.” It is contended that one preaches “gospel” to the unsaved and teaches “doctrine” to the saved and that this is irreversible, that is, you cannot preach the “gospel” to the saved, nor can one teach “doctrine” to the unsaved.
This theory is readily seen to be false and the ultimate consequences of it devastating when we study the Scriptures. According to the Scriptures, it is the gospel that was being preached to the Christian in Galatia! As far as can understand, the Galatians were “already” saved!! Was Paul expressing deep concern to these brethren, Galatians 1:6-9, about those who would preach the gospel, and not doctrine, than those with whom we have to deal in the arena of the mind to cause them “to be grounded in the most holy faith”? If he or she has been properly called by the gospel, he is to be often reminded about what “saved them”!! What was Paul doing preaching the gospel over and over again to the saved and not doctrine?? Issues like the use of instrumental music in our worship to God, premillennialism, tongues speaking and other teachings MUST BER exposed over and over again. The liberal might consider them matters of opinion, but these false doctrines/gospels undermine the verity of the Word of God! Those who accept these false theories with open arms have committed egregious error. So, our concern over this is well-founded and it is an issue to which we must turn our attention. I had an old preacher warn me in my youth that the church is “won or lost every Lord’s Day” and has to be reminded as to just what it IS!!
Truly, if one is a faithful Christian, he is to be accepted in full fellowship, even though we might differ with others on various matters of opinion. The problem is those who call things matters of opinion have their opinion being preached and not the doctrine of Christ! We never intend to make personal these issues, but matters of opinions are not substitutes for doctrinal discussions. That is, we must assigned ourselves to the task of showing what that the Bible describes as “righteousness” and not some influential brothers pet notion.
If is contended that we preach too much on the basic principles of salvation AFTER one has obeyed the gospel call and that there is a rigid distinction made between these two concepts what did Paul mean in Romans 16:25? Paul penned these words: “now to him that is of power to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the ministry, which is kept secret since the world began.” Let’s ask some questions! Who was to be established? The Roman Christians. By what were they to be established? According to the gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ. When one preaches the gospel, he is not only preaching to the unsaved but the saved! Is it possible that the Holy Spirit did not know that there was a distinction?
If we do contend that the word gospel is used in a sense only to be taught alien sinners and doctrine is used only in the sense to be taught children of God then a new day has dawned in our understanding of the Scriptures. It was the same apostle Paul who wrote to the Church of Christ and Rome, Romans 1:16- “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God and the salvation to everyone that believers to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there in is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith.” May I ask what the righteousness of God might be? Whatever you may believe that it is, it was what Paul wanted to preach to the Church of Christ at Rome. In Acts 15:7: “And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up… the Gentiles by my mouth heard the word of the gospel, and believed.” Somebody is confused and it is not Peter!! The concepts are interchangeable!

Legalism vs Liberalism Part 6

The importance of right-thinking is talked about in the Bible. Study together the following passages:
“as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”he honors me with his lips; but his heart is not with Me.” Proverbs 23:7. It has been said that “we may not be everything we think we are; but what we think, we are!” A wise man once said; “a man is what he thinks about all day long.” It is often been heard in the same fashion when men say: “you are what you eat.” The Bible says, “you are what you think.”
“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.” Matthew 12:35 The word heart, in this passage, means mind. The good man is able to bring forth good things because he has a good treasure, that is a right-thinking mind. The evil man brings forth evil things because he has an evil treasure, that is a wrong thinking mind. All our actions have as their origin, the thoughts of our mind. If we think right, we do right: if we think wrong we do wrong.
Paul writes:” let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that he may know how you ought to answer each one.” Colossians 4:6 Through the years we’ve heard many fine messages concerning the purity of speech, morally and doctrinally. There was a time, it seems, when brethren had far more concern with their manner of speech: concerned that there be no uncertain sound given in their messages—then we find today. In our time, a man can think the most foolish, divisive and unscriptural statements, greatly damaging to the truth, and of the kingdom, and if someone dares speak against him, there is a great rush to defend the person whom they think is “picked on.” Sound men are called mean, vicious and judgmental in daring to rebuke such dangerous speech. The question is never asked from whence or by what authority did their message emanate?
Often times, we are hearing and reading pure sectarianism from our pulpits and in our papers. Some of our preachers and teachers are not sound enough in the faith to study from those who were members of the body of Christ before them. They run great links to read from sectarian volumes, from men who never found out enough about Christ to become a Christian or a child of God, and are yet quoted as authority. There is no question that there is wisdom in men who are not Christians but in following the sacred book it would seem wise and sound to at least have the record of a man’s obedience to the gospel if you put such trust in his exegesis of a verse of Scripture!! We need to pour over the Divine Volume to find out what God said on a given subject, and less concerned about what Doctor ? has taught or said. May we be anxious to fill our sermons with citations from the Bible, and be content with biblical language instead of bending over backward to try to quote someone who is not even a member of the body of Christ. We need to speak simply New Testament lingo, as Paul wrote Titus: “sound speech, that cannot be condemned.” Titus 2:8 Those who try to be novel and shocking to the brethren, need to labor to see how true they can be to the Bible, and how scriptural they can be in the use of terminology and expression.
Sympathy will not replace truth. If a man enters the pulpit and uses language, teaches doctrine that is not found in the Scriptures the word of God, he needs far more than sympathy, he needs loving instruction. Sympathy for these brethren will not help them. They entered the pulpit intending to say what they said, and there is no excuse for coming forth with uncertain sounds. The idea of allowing people to do wrong because you feel sorry for them is not a tenant of New Testament doctrine but a present context of liberalism that denies the truth of the word of God!

Legalism vs Liberalism Part 5

On Sunday mornings, the liberal preacher preaches to the audience made up of some of the biggest sinners in town, and never thinks that it is his job to help these people save their souls. He does not care, for these are the ones who wield the greatest influence in town. Instead of taking a stand for the truth, when it would cost him his nice new parsonage, gas allowance, and six weeks paid vacation; these brethren “play straddle the fence” while the church is polluted and corrupted. When the Devil moves in, the church blows up, and God’s people finally get their eyes opened and move out! The picture of the popular church is seen when the Devil is seen laughing on one side of the fence as he steals God’s sheep and the Lord stands on the other side saying, “cry aloud and spare not.” This preacher looks to his community popularity as he is labeled man of the year or “easy to get along-with.” The Chamber of Commerce praises him for his freedom from bigotry and his broad views. He speaks learnedly and dabbles and babbles in antithetical fields and on occasion, when no dissenters are present, he touches lightly upon some phrase of the gospel. He never mentions Hell. Doctrines against damnation that Jesus preached is out of date and too old- fashion for him. He denies God His justice and wrath as he speaks on God’s mercy, grace and love… And the people love it!! Every service, when the invitation is extended (if it is), nobody ever expects someone to come forward to repent. He lays awake at night trying to figure out how to label differences between right and wrong as “non-essential distinctions” and of “no vital importance.” Unfortunately, sinners confess Christ without having repented, they are baptized in water in a form of mockery and naturally are born dead. New Testament Christianity is of no concern. The worshipper is never introduced to the love that Christ had for His church!
When they advise young preachers, they’d tell them to preach carefully because they don’t want to hurt their position or standing with the eldership, who must a weak on “the issues.” The apostle Jude’s warning to “earnestly contend for the faith” is seen as something that fits another time and another era. Unlike the apostle Jude, some of our brethren are not really sure what that faith is-they’re still trying to make up their minds. A definition of the gospel of Christ to them, is preaching to avoid hurting the feelings of the elders wife’s parents who are not members of the body of Christ, unfortunately, they will not learn it here. If we all went to a doctor concerning health and we ran into a doctor with the same direction in mind, how long do you think we could live under his care? Yet, some of our brothers and sisters seem determined to try to face all odds, fight all obstacles, and attempt to be a savior in a congregation that hasn’t been composed of the saved for a long time, now! He’s like a man with water in the boat, staying in the water, never jumping to safety, he stays in the boat with a teacup emptying the water as fast as he can, thinking that he can save the boat, himself, and his family that attend there! All of us know the end result of the guy in that boat but it’s a shame there’s one person who doesn’t know the outcome and that is the Christians sitting in the pew with all that danger surrounding them, yet is not told in advance the preacher’s intent, without his approval.
Poison can be administered that condemns the soul in many ways. One of the surest ways to leave man condemned is to poison God’s Holy Book. Obviously, a translation that sounds foreign and different and has not had much research done to establish its credibility, is key. How gullible people are when the version of the Bible, or a perversion, is used instead of one that is exacting and demanding? To wrest the Scriptures, to twist, to torture or to turn the minds of the student comes without effort. Never fear my friend, the modern translations are used for a reason and it is up to you and I to love God enough to demand His word or absent ourselves from that assembly!!

Legalism vs Liberalism Part 4

Simple obedience to what God requires of us-and presenting God’s requirements as law-is not legalism!! There are those who present what they call the love of God as opposition to the commandments of God, thinking God contradicts Himself being overwhelmed by His heart of love-allowing people to do as they desire, instead of as He commands. There are some who suppose it legalism who respect the law of the new covenant, insisting upon obedience to the requirements of God. The New Testament makes it clear that submission to the commandments of God IS the condition of eternal salvation! What seems to bug the dissenter most is the detail. We, who follow the law of God in exactness, demand it!! The divine oracles were never divided into important details and unimportant details. True, there are commandments in the New Testament that do not relate to us, the context would decide that, but who among uninspired men, can decide which command is important or unimportant?
David declared: “all Thy commandments are righteousness.” Psalms 119: 172 It is open rebellion to God question anything He had written! Talk of minor matters of the gospel of Christ being insignificant is atheism!! Complaining because someone, in the judgment of the complainer, is hung up over the details of the Scriptures is opposed to covenant we swore to when we confessed Christ!! Jesus said: “woe to you, scribes and Pharisees; hypocrites! For ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy. Do not follow after their work for they say and do not.” Matthew 23:1-3. The Pharisees were legalist, not because they were careful to keep the law of God, even the details about law, but because they added to the law. Hear Jesus: “ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition. You hypocrites, well spoke Isaiah the prophet of you, saying: “this people honor Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.” Matthew 15:6-9
We “speak where the Bible speaks’” we say, but sometimes “when the Bible is silent,” we speak anyway. We had surely better be careful not to add to that which is written, or take away from that which God has spoken. The apostle John, by inspiration wrote: “whosoever goes onward and abides not in the gospel of Christ, hath not God: he did abides in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son. II John 9.
Some today are more worried about collecting a paycheck and not nearly as worried about checking in to heaven at peace with God! They define the love of God as compromise and never think of it, as discipline. They’re more interested in making sure that they word their teaching and preaching so exact that no listeners feelings will be hurt, but never worry about hurting God’s feelings! I have never been to a doctor’s office, been given a shot, where whether or not there would be pain, stopped the medicine from being given! It is the doctor’s duty to administer, according to his oath, the right medicine to heal and cure. There is no difference in that and preaching the gospel, if the gospel preacher spends all his time concerned about hurting somebody’s feelings he may start considering to spend a little time not hurting God’s feelings by rejecting God’s word! To cry foul, foul or legalism, legalism as a means of not carrying out the commission of Jesus Christ as he commanded, will never be accepted by God! That was the feature movie in Hell. Who could ever think themselves so important as to think they could make God change His word, just to satisfy them?
